About the Family of Great Dane Athena

We are a family of animal lovers. I came from a family of show dog owners and have had Danes for nearly 40 years, so loving animals and breeding is an inbred part of me. We have had many animals. We have taken young un-weaned babies from shelters and hand fed them, rescued wild animals of many kinds, and love our cats and dogs. We generally only have one or two dogs or Great Danes at a time and they have all been family members in every sense. Athena sits on our couch and watches TV with us, eats in our kitchen, and only goes outside to relieve herself or to run and play. She sleeps with us in the house and protectively watches over our daughter. Athena also has two pet cats. We have a one acre yard and our Athena enjoys her freedom and running when she goes out to play.

We love the Merle color. I have studied the genetics of how to breed a healthy and wonderful family pet member. Though the Merle Great Dane is rare and difficult to breed, I think it is the most beautiful.

Our Great Dane, Athena, is licensed by Therapy Dogs International. She visits hospitals, nursing homes, preschools, and special needs children to raise their spirits. In order to be a TDI licensed dog, she has been extensively trained, and she must be very comfortable around groups, not startle easily, and exhibit a calm disposition around patients and children.

Athena has all her health certifications:

  • OFA hips good – no signs of dysplasia for her or her hereditary line

  • OFA heart healthy – no signs of congenital heart defects

  • OFA – good eye function

  • No known incidents of bloat in her or her line, and

  • Normal Thyroid function

Athena is 31 inches and 120 lbs. The sire Bodacious Bo is a solid blue 35 inches and 165 lbs. You can see Bodacious’ family and professional breeders at his website: Heinz Danes

We have certified and bred our danes for health.  They have all the congentital certifications available.  Their lines have no bloat, back at least two generations or more that we know of. They are bred and handled to ensure excellent dispositions.

We invite applicants to adopt one of our Great Danes as a family member.
